June is PRIDE month across this country and the word has been changed into what the society norm is for the day.
PRIDE means a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possession that are widely admired; consciousness of one’s own dignity; being proud of a particular quality or skill.
Many in the church, when talking about pride, especially during this June pride month, will quote this verse …
Proverbs 16:18 ~ “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
OR
Proverbs 29:23 ~ “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”
The word PRIDE in this two verses means “majesty, arrogance; rage; a pride that destroys”. This is NOT the PRIDE I want to talk about this morning. The word PRIDE in our society has been changed from the original definition to mean “the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, quality and increased visibility of the LGBTQIA groups. This is NOT the PRIDE I want to talk about this morning. I want to get back to the Biblical based definition of PRIDE that us as Christians SHOULD have active in our lives.
PRIDE —> Patience
Romans 12:12 ~ “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Colossians 3:12 ~ “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,”
Ephesians 4:2 ~ “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,”
PRIDE —> Respect
1 Peter 2:17 ~ “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 ~ “We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.”
Matthew 7:12 ~ “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
PRIDE —> Individuality
Matthew 10:30 ~ “But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.”
Luke 15:3-7 ~ “So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 ~ “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
John 3:16 ~ “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
PRIDE —> Dependability
2 Timothy 3:14 ~ “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it”
1 Corinthians 16:13 ~ “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”
Philippians 1:27 ~ “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,”
PRIDE —> Effort
2 Peter 1:5-11 ~ “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Luke 13:24 ~ “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.”
We need to have PRIDE in our Christian Walk with God —> Patience, Respect, Individuality, Dependability, Effort
