Psalm 92:10–15 ESV ~ But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; you have poured over me fresh oil. My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants. The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the Lord is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

 

David was a man who greeted life on a positive note. He was confident in his belief concerning God’s faithfulness; therefore, we are not surprised to hear him say positively, “You have poured over me fresh oil.”

 

We need not read far in Psalm until we are convinced David believed in the ever-living and all-sufficient God. We will also find as we draw near to God we will move into a region of positive certainty. While we depend upon man, we are in the realm of “maybe” and perhaps.” When we trust in God, we are removed from everything that is of change and conjecture. Our God is a God of truth and righteousness.

 

So, what did David mean when he said, “You have poured over me fresh oil.”?

  • He meant his strength would be renewed.

Isaiah 40:31 ESV ~ but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

 

  • He was assured of divine favor.

1 John 5:4 ESV ~ For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

 

  • He would be qualified for office.

1 Corinthians 1:27–29 ESV ~ But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

 

  • He would have new cause for delight.

Psalm 37:4 ESV ~ Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

The confidence of David in this text is well grounded upon God.

  • David’s expectation of fresh anointing rested in God
  • We can be sure of a fresh supply because of our union with Christ
  • We are hidden with Christ in God

Colossians 3:3 ESV ~ For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

 

  • We are the branches; He is the vine

John 15:5 ESV ~ I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

 

  • The Holy Spirit dwells in us
  • Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit
  • There can be no famine in our souls while He dwells there
  • We possess God’s promises

2 Corinthians 1:20 ESV ~ For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

 

  • The experiences of God’s people in all ages verify it

This confidence of a fresh anointing banishes our fears

  • The fear of poverty
  • The fear of doubt
  • The fear of temptation
  • The fear of heartache
  • The fear of backsliding
  • The fear of confusion

 

Add A Note

 

God empower us when He pours His oil and blessings upon us

  • Anointing with oil was an act of consecration to the Lord’s service (Psalm 89:20). It symbolized the power of the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 16:13) and also symbolized the joy and gladness that come from God’s abundant blessings (Psalm 45:7; Isaiah 61:3).

Psalm 89:20 ESV ~ I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him,

1 Samuel 16:13 ESV ~ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Psalm 45:7 ESV ~ you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;

Isaiah 61:3 ESV ~ to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

 

  • Therefore, fresh oil represents a fresh …
  • Anointing from God
  • Infilling of God’s Spirit
  • Enduement or transfusion of power
  • Bestowal of blessings and joy

 

God also gives us victory over our adversaries and all wickedness and all sickness, both human and spiritual.

Ephesians 6:10–13 ESV ~ Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

 

David further testified that God had give him victory over his adversaries. He had seen God’s judgment fall on his foes, vindicating him and establishing his righteousness. His enemies may have prospered for a season, BUT GOD in His justice had cut them down.
