The Presence of the Holy Spirit

Sermon Outline for Sunday, April 11 & 18, 2021

Pentecost Sunday is Seven Weeks from today, May 23, 2021.

John 16:12–15 ESV

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

We as Christians need the Holy Spirit of God in our lives day by day. We do realize that when we get saved, the Spirit of God starts His move in process into our lives. We also believe that the next step after salvation is sanctification, in which the Spirit of God is cleaning out the closets and all the hidden places in our lives; this is an ongoing process and will not just happen overnight. Upon sanctification, we believe that baptism in the Holy Spirit happens next; but we must be seeking and longing and desiring. Over the next several weeks, leading up to Pentecost Sunday, we will be looking at many aspects of the Holy Spirit of God to learn more about Him and our NEED for Him in our lives day by day.

He is our Commander –  John 16:13

He is our Comforter –  John 14:16

John 14:16 ESV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

• As Saved Ones:

• We are to Walk in the Spirit of God

Galatians 5:16 ESV

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

• We received a new nature when we were redeemed out of the world that enables us to walk in the Spirit

2 Peter 1:2–4 ESV

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

• As Separated Ones:

• We are to continue in the Spirit.

Galatians 3:3 ESV

Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

Galatians 5:7 ESV

You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

• Think on some things that would hinder you personally from following the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

• As Serving Ones:

• We are to live in the Spirit

Galatians 5:25 ESV

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

• The power of God’s Holy Spirit gives us the ability to serve His as Obedient servants.

Psalm 126:5–6 ESV

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

• As Seeking Ones:

• We have access in the Spirit

Ephesians 2:18 ESV

For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

• We have unlimited access to the Godhead

Romans 8:26–27 ESV

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

• Have you ever prayed and could not find words to express your heart to God and just groaned?

• Yet you knew that God was hearing you!

• As Supporters:

• We are to pray in the Spirit

Romans 8:27 ESV

And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Jeremiah 27:18 ESV

If they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, then let them intercede with the Lord of hosts, that the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon.

• It is the responsibility of every believer to pray for others

• As Saints:

• We are to worship in the Spirit

John 4:23 ESV

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

• In the Old Testament they worship God through type and sacrifice.

• In the New Testament times, we worship God in the Spirit.

• As Servants:

• We are to love in the Spirit

Colossians 1:8 ESV

and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

• Here was a church under fire from the enemy, yet they still had the love of God in their hearts for others.

• Love is God’s greatest weapon to win our enemies to the Lord.
