Here in Alabama, harvest season is a year-round cycle rather than a single event, because of Alabama’s strange and unusual climate. You can find harvest season for:
• Fruit:
• Strawberries: March-June
• Blueberries & Blackberries: May - July
• Peaches: May - September
• Apples: Late July - October
• Pecans: October - December
• Vegetables:
• Spring/Summer: Corn, Tomatoes, Peppers
• Summer: Squash
• Fall: Pumpkins, Sweet Potatoes, Collards
• Row Crops:
• Winter Wheat: May - July
• Cotton: October - December
• Corn: August - September
Something most all time, except January and February! Why? Cause it is COLD!!!
Back to the harvest fields, in the Bible, on the spiritual side, these fields are a grave concern to God and with good reason.
John 4:35–36 ~ “35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.”
We can talk all day about statistics of the earth’s population (8.3 billion) or the United States population (348 million). We can break that down into groups: male vs female; age categories; political affiliations; and even religious affiliations (Christian vs non-Christians; churched vs unchurched; claim to be Christian vs not; total sold out to Christ vs pew warmer). But until we really see people as truly lost, it is doubtful we will do much reaping.
How then shall we see the lostness of men and the vast potential harvest? We need the Holy Spirit’s help, for He alone can open the eyes of our understanding; only He alone can draw man to God.
In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he described the state of this people when he found them while they were yet lost. What Paul said of the Ephesians is true of every person that is outside Christ, no matter the century of time. As much as humanity thinks it has changed and evolved and progressed, there is one think mankind can not changed … mans condition outside of a life with Christ. A look at this condition will enable us to understand the awfulness of being lost and hopefully change our urgency of spreading the gospel to those in this world.
Ephesians 2:1 ~ “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins”
1 Timothy 5:6 ~ “but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.”
• The lost are “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). They are living dead. “But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth” (1 Timothy 5:6).
Ephesians 2:2 ~ “in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—”
• The lost are known by their walk. They walk “according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air” and are dominated by “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). They walk “in trespasses and sins.”
Ephesians 2:3 ~ “among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”
Romans 1:18 ~ “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
• The lost are “the children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:3). We are told that “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” (Romans 1:18). No doubt the greatest revelation of God’s wrath against sin took place at Calvary, when His Son bore the full impact of that wrath.
Ephesians 2:12 ~ “remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.”
• The lost are without Christ (Ephesians 2:12). Thus they are without light, without life, without truth, without bread, without a mediator, without the way to God.
• The lost are “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel” (Ephesians 2:12). They are without heavenly citizenship, foreigners to the family of God and without inheritance.
Galatians 3:29 ~ “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
• The lost are “strangers from the covenants of promise” (Ephesians 2:12). They have no claim on the promises of God, for they are not the “seed” of Abraham. “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29).
Proverbs 14:32 ~ “The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, but the righteous finds refuge in his death.”
• The lost have no hope (Ephesians 2:12). How pitiful is the person who has no hope! He faces life and death without an assured hope. “The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death” (Proverbs 14:32).
• The lost are “without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). They are on their own!
Ephesians 2:17 ~ “And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.”
Ephesians 2:13 ~ “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
• The lost are “afar off” (Ephesians 2:17), though they need not be, for we can all be “made nigh by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13).
All of this has to do with lostness, lostness as it relates to eternity.
Hebrews 9:27 ~ “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,”
Matthew 24:51 ~ “and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 25:46 ~ “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.””
2 Thessalonians 1:9 ~ “They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,”
Revelation 20:13–14 ~ “13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”
As far as eternity is concerned, it is not going to matter what car you drove, what house you live in, what job you had, how successful society thinks you are, how many scholarships your kids get in school and so on and so on … you get the idea. What matters is where you soul is at for all eternity.
All this lostness - however this is why Jesus came!!!
Luke 19:10 ~ “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Once we get the urgency of spreading the good news about Jesus, we will begin to pray.
Matthew 9:37–38 ~ “37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.””
Once we get the urgency of spreading the good news about Jesus, we will go.
Matthew 28:19–20 ~ “19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
2 Peter 3:9 ~ “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
You want to GROW? Let’s get out of our ruts and begin to spread the gospel and reach the Unreaped Fields.
