For the month of September, we are going to be looking at the Declaration of Faith in the Church of God. This is the core of what we believe, not only as a Christian, but also as a church, being a part of the Church of God. Please note, everything that we believe MUST be backed up by Scripture and we are looking at not only what we believe, but WHY we believe.

Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV) ~ And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

  • In the verbal inspiration of the Bible.
    • 2 Timothy 3:16 ~ “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
    • The words “is given by inspiration of God” means “breathed by God”.
    • The skills, knowledge, and personal styles of the individual human authors are the vehicles used by the Holy Spirit to produce an infallible record of God’s saving self-revelation in history, law, poetry, prophecy, and epistle, so that there is no error in either report or doctrine.
    • The clause “the Lord said” occurs 3,800 times in the Old Testament alone.
    • The Bible, 66 individuals books that was written by 40 different authors over 1,500 years of time, has such a unity that it can be regarded as one book. This unity shows up in many areas: the doctrine of God, the doctrine of salvation, the doctrine of man, the doctrine of eternal destiny, and the plan of the ages.

  • In one God eternally existing in three persons; namely, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
    • All qualities of divine nature (infinite, eternal, and unchangeable) belong to each of the Persons of the Trinity. They are the same in substance and are equal in power, glory, and honor.
    • Scriptures that speak about the oneness of God: Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; 1 Corinthians 8:4 & 6; 1 Timothy 2:5; and James 2:19.
    • Scriptures that speak about the plurality of God: Genesis 1:1 & 26, 11:7; Psalm 45:6, 7; Hebrews 1:8; John 3:16, 14:26, 15:26; Romans 8:27 and Matthew 28:19.
    • Matthew 28:19 ~ “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

  • That Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father, conceived of the Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin Mary. That Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead. That He ascended to heaven and is today at the right hand of the Father as the Intercessor.
    • Three major fields of doctrine taught in this statement:
      • The nature of Christ (divine and human)
      • The character of the redemption which Christ purchased
      • The nature of Christ’s present ministry
    • Romans 1:3, 4 ~ “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”

  • That all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for the forgiveness of sins.
    • Romans 3:23 ~ “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
    • Sin is an act and/or condition that is the product of the human will.

  • That justification, regeneration, and the new birth are wrought by faith in the blood of Jesus Christ.
    • Romans 3:24 ~ “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”

  • In sanctification subsequent to the new birth, through faith in the blood of Christ; through the Word, and by the Holy Ghost.
    • Sanctification is an act of divine grace.
    • Psalm 51:7 ~ “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
    • 1 Corinthians 6:11 ~ “An such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
