The Spiritual Life of the Believer

Passages: Romans 8:1; Romans 8:34; Romans 8:33; Romans 8:28; Romans 8:37; Romans 8:32; Romans 8:38–39; Romans 8:2–4; Romans 8:12–17; Romans 8:18; Romans 8:31; Romans 8:37; Romans 8:38

This is one of the best-loved chapters in the Bible. It is the gem of the great Book of Romans. It is one of the grand spiritual chapters of the Bible. “The Spirit” is referred to no less than 19 times. There is a contrast presented between the old man and the new man, the dominion of the law and the dominion of the Spirit, being in the flesh and being in Christ, a wretched man and a justified man, the bondage of sin and the liberty of the Spirit. This chapter depicts the spiritual life of the believer from beginning to completion.

Paul describes the progress of the believer’s spiritual life in three great scriptural doctrines.

Justification – the Position of the Believer

Romans 8:1 ~ “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

The beginning of the Spiritual Life

If you will remember last week, I stated that we needed to be IN CHRIST. You either IN or you are OUT!

  • Our Spiritual Life begins IN CHRIST.
    • Raised to a new position by regeneration IN CHRIST
    • Handed a new freedom by justification – no condemnation

  • New life is lived IN CHRIST
    • In Christ – no condemnation – (Romans 8:34 ~ “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”)
    • In Christ – no charge or judgment – (Romans 8:33 ~ “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.”)
    • In Christ – no failure or doubt – (Romans 8:28 ~ “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”)
    • In Christ – no defeat – (Romans 8:37 ~ “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”)
    • In Christ – no want – (Romans 8:32 ~ “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”)
    • In Christ – no separation (Romans 8:38–39 ~ “38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”)

Sanctification – the Privilege of the Believer

Living the Spiritual Life

Romans 8:2–4 ~ “2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

  • The experience of sanctification is God’s part
    • The law of sin and death
    • The law of the Spirit of life

Romans 8:12–17 “12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

  • The life of holiness is the believer’s part
    • Believers are in debt to the Spirit, not to the flesh. The word debtors means to be obligated, to owe, to be bound by some duty.
      • Believers are not in “debt” to the flesh. The flesh has done nothing for man, nothing of real value.
      • Believers are in debt to the Spirit. It is the Spirit who has done so much for man, the Spirit to whom we are so indebted.
      • The Spirit of God …
        • is the Spirit of life
        • has freed us from sin and death
        • fulfills righteousness IN us
        • pulls our minds to spiritual things
        • gives us life and peace
        • dwells within us, removing us from the flesh and identifying us as being IN CHRIST
        • gives life to our spirits now and assures us that He will give life to our mortal bodies in the great day of redemption

Glorification – the Prospects of the Believer

Rewarding the Spiritual Life

  • Anticipation of eternal glory (Romans 8:18 ~ “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”)

  • Realization of eternal glory
    • More than convinced (Romans 8:31 ~ “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”)
    • More than conquerors (Romans 8:37 ~ “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”)
    • More than confident (Romans 8:38 ~ “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,”)

This passage of Scripture begins with no condemnation and ends with no separation (from conversion to glory), begins in Christ and ends in heaven (from justified to glorified, from regenerated to raptured). The spiritual life is one filled with the love of Christ, the power of the Spirit, and the hope of heaven.
