O Holy Night

Passages: Isaiah 7:14; Genesis 49:10; Luke 1:26–27; Luke 2:6–7; John 3:16; Luke 2:13–14; Matthew 2:1–2; Luke 2:15

God sent His Son, Jesus, for us as the greatest gift we could ever know.

A NIGHT OF INTERVENTION

  • Many times, in man’s history, God has intervened; the flood, Sodom; but never has He intervened like this.

  • There were:
    • Plans – Isaiah 7:14 ~ “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
    • Promises – Genesis 49:10 ~ “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.”
      • An interesting thing now happened in the prophetic blessing pronounced over Judah.
      • In that day and time, a father’s birthright included a double portion of the inheritance and the leadership of the family.
      • But in the case of the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—it also included God’s promise of the very special promised seed, the Savior of the world.
    • Preparation
      • God prepared a woman.
      • Luke 1:26–27 ~ “26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.”
    • Person
      • When everything was right, God sent our Savior into a stable
      • Luke 2:6–7 ~ “6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”

A NIGHT OF INSPIRATION

  • God was inspired to send – John 3:16 ~ “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

  • Angels were inspired to sing – Luke 2:13–14 ~ “13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!””

  • Wise Men were inspired to sacrifice – Matthew 2:1–2 ~ “1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.””

  • Shepherds were inspired to search – Luke 2:15 ~ “When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.””

  • Millions have been inspired to serve.
