Easter Sunday - He is ALIVE! - The Significance of Easter
Passages: Mark 16:1–6
Church … HE IS ALIVE!!!
This morning, excitement is in the air. Many have new church clothes that have been purchased just for today. Families have lunch, egg hunts and so much more planned for this day. Today for many Pastor and church staff / volunteers, it feels like Super Bowl Sunday. Today is the day that many who don’t go to church other times are going to make an extra effort to be at church today.
What we don’t realize is this … Next Sunday, April 12, 2026, … Jesus is still ALIVE!!! Two Sunday from now, April 26, 2026, … Jesus is still ALIVE!!!
I have watched some on social media, many churches will make a HUGE production about today. There are going to be dramas, plays, skits, major choir productions. And, trust me, there is nothing wrong with that! I have been in my fair share of dramas and plays. No one has ever asked me to lead a solo in a choir production yet, but there is still time. (Let’s face it, that is not happening!)
I just hope with everything that is happening, people do not forget the Significance of Easter.
I read an article that an anonymous lady wrote. The short of this article was that she was tired of religion and pretending to be a Christian. She woke up one morning at 2am and felt like she needed to read her Bible but instead began to cry. When her husband woke up, to her crying, she began to tell him she was done with Christianity. As he listened to her, he realized she was not done with Christianity as much as she was done with the commercial world of Christianity.
What does this mean? She really was done with the push to buy the newest and best Bible, Devotional, book and more. She was done trying to beat the latest Bible app reading streak. She was done with trying to be at all the Bible studies all over town. She just wanted to be a Christian. Be a Christian in the truest sense of what it is to be a Christian. She just wanted to worship her RISEN SAVIOR!!!
This morning, as we jump into the scripture, I want each person that is here this morning or joined us on Live Feed, or listening later on a Podcast, our YouTube Channel, or wherever you may be joining us ...I want YOU to realize that you don’t have to be a Commercial Christian, God just wants YOU to be a Biblical Christian.
Let’s look at the Significance of Easter. Take a look at Mark 16:1-6.
Mark 16:1–6 ~ “When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.”
As we read this passage this morning, many things begin rolling around in our head. We are looking at the first proof of the resurrection of Christ; however, we see sad and despairing women. A couple of facts we need to notice here:
• They were actual witnesses of His death and burial. They know He was dead, they saw it, and they knew where He had been laid, they saw it happen.
• They followed behind the procession to the tomb. There were no questions in their minds whatsoever about His being dead and buried.
• This early Sunday morning, they brought expensive spices and came to anoint His body.
• Apparently, they had bought the spices Saturday evening after 6:00pm, after the Sabbath ended.
• They arose “very early on the first day of the week” to go and embalm Him and finish the burial process.
• They knew He was dead; but they still cared for Him, so they wanted to take care of His body, just as loved ones would do.
• At this time, they were religionists who strictly obeyed the law. They were strict in the observance of the Sabbath.
• Just imagine, their loved One was death, yet they would not break the Sabbath law even to take care of Him.
• The women were obedient to the commandments of God.
• They were moral, truthful women who would never think about or even consider lying about the death and resurrection of Jesus.
All these things we have read show us the start of a great story of the Significance of Easter. But this is not the end, only the beginning!
Easter has a Significance because “He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid Him.”
• Jesus had died.
• Jesus was crucified on a cross.
• He hung there until He died.
• All the events took place to make sure He was dead.
• The Roman soldiers took every step they knew to make sure He was dead.
• Jesus was buried.
• Joseph requested the body of Jesus, so He could bury Him.
• He and others wrapped His body in linen.
• His body was placed in a borrowed tomb, and a stone was rolled over its entrance.
• The tomb was sealed and guards were posted to keep out thieves.
• All these events attest to the face that Jesus had died and was buried.
• Jesus rose from the grave.
• The women went to the tomb but found an empty tomb.
• Peter and John went into the tomb and found grave clothes still there and intact.
• The guards went to the Jewish authorities and told them the tomb was empty.
• Jesus appears to those who were walking on the road to Emmaus.
• All these events attest to the fact that Jesus rose from the grave.
• Jesus lives today!
• Acts 1 tells us that the risen Jesus appeared many times over a 40-day period.
• Verse 3 begins to tell us how Jesus ascended into heaven while the Apostles watched.
• The Bible tells us Jesus sits today at the right hand of the Father.
• I stand here today and tell you that Jesus is alive!
• All the events and evidence point to the fact that Jesus is alive today!
