The Holy Spirit and the Sanctified (June 7, 2026)

To the SAVED and SANCTIFIED, the Holy Spirit, HE is ...

•     Our Advocate - to plead for us

•     John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,”

•     Our Advocate, Our Comforter - one called in, one called to the side of another. The purpose is to help in anyway possible. No one word can actuarily translate or describe the word Jesus used here, but the word that comes closest is helper.

•     Our Baptism - to unite us

•     1 Corinthians 12:13 “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”

•     The picture is practical and descriptive: the human body is one organism, one person, one being, one life; yet it has many members or parts to it. However, despite its many parts, the body is still one organic whole. All the parts of the body are still in the body and actually form the body, enabling it to function.

•     Our Leader - to guide us

•     Romans 8:14 “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

•     The Spirit leads and guides the believer along the way of righteousness and truth. He guides the believer by moving in advance and going ahead of him. He blazes the path, making sure the believer knows where to walk.

•     Our Fullness - to enrich us

•     Ephesians 5:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,”

•     This command is in the present tense which means that the believer is to be constantly filled with the Spirit; he is to keep on being filled. The Holy Spirit is to infill the believer continuously.

•     Our Indweller - to control us

•     1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

•     This is extremely important. It is a truth that should be stressed just as much as the Spirit indwelling the body of the Christian believer, for defiling the temple or the church is to result in severe judgment. This is the very point Paul is making. The Corinthian church was being defiled by some. Some were grumbling, misbehaving, and being divisive. They were in danger of the severest judgment. They needed to learn and fear, for they were defiling the very temple of God, the sanctuary in which God’s own Spirit dwelt.

•     Our Illuminator - to reveal

•     John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

•     Christ said that He had many things to say to the apostles, but they were not able to “bear” (handle, grasp) them, not yet. He would share them later through the Holy Spirit. Christ tells the Spirit what to say and how to guide believers. Christ, of course, is the One who knows the infirmities and the needs of men. He knows by personal experience. Therefore, He is the One who is appointed by God to instruct the Spirit in His guiding ministry. This should cause our hearts to leap with great joy and confidence, for the Lord knows exactly what we face—knows by experience.

•     Our Joy - to bless us

•     Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

•     There is joy (charas): an inner gladness; a deep seated pleasure. It is a depth of assurance and confidence that ignites a cheerful heart. It is a cheerful heart that leads to cheerful behavior.

•     Our Oil of Gladness - to refresh us

•     Psalm 45:7 “you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;”

•     Jesus endured the cross, suffered like no man has ever suffered. Because of the pain and sorrow Jesus felt, Jesus also experienced Joy and Gladness that is beyond any experienced by any other. A portion of this gladness is passed to you and I through the Holy Spirit.

•     Our Power - to empower us

•     Ephesians 3:16 “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,”

•     To strengthen (be made strong, tough, enduring; to have energy or force; to act, endure, resist)

•     To give power (force, energy, might)

•     Our Sanctifier - to purify us

•     Romans 15:16 “to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.”

•     Our Unction - to anoint us

•     1 John 2:20 “But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.”

•     In the Old Testament only prophets, priests, and kings were anointed. They were anointed by pouring oil upon their heads. The oil symbolized the Spirit of God coming upon them for service. Such anointing was the privilege of only a few chosen people. But Jesus Christ changed this. He was anointed at His baptism—not with the symbol of the Spirit, that is, the oil, but rather with the Holy Spirit Himself. What John is saying is this: the same anointing is no longer just the possession of only a chosen few. It is the possession of every believer. The Holy Spirit is the believer’s protective force against false teaching and seducing spirits, against antichrists.

•     Our Well of Living Water - to satisfy us

•     John 4:14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.””

•     The stagnant waters of the flesh and the world never quench a man’s thirst.

•     The living water keeps a man from ever thirsting again.
