Holiness
Passages: Psalm 68:3; Psalm 51:2; Isaiah 35:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Luke 1:74-75; Matthew 5:8; James 3:17; Philippians 2:15; Matthew 5:17-30; Revelation 7:14
Let’s
define the word Holiness. At its core the word holiness means “being set apart
for a special purpose and possessing absolute moral purity”. Now that we have
the definition from the world standard, yes this is the definition from the
world, let’s look at the Biblical side of things. Let’s look at what holiness
is, what God adds to holiness for our lives, the purpose of holiness and the
necessity of holiness.
Holiness
is:
• An experience
• Psalm 68:3 “But the righteous shall be glad; they
shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy!”
• Psalm 51:2 “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!”
• A Way of Life
• Isaiah 35:8 “And a highway shall be there, and it
shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It
shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall
not go astray.”
• The Will of God
• 1 Thessalonians 4:3 “For this is the will of God,
your sanctification:
Holiness
and:
• Holiness and Service
• Luke 1:74–75 “that we, being delivered from the
hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and
righteousness before him all our days.”
• Holiness and a Vision of God
• Matthew 5:8 ““Blessed are the pure in heart, for
they shall see God.”
• Holiness and Wisdom
• James 3:17 “But the wisdom from above is first
pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits,
impartial and sincere.”
The
Purpose of Holiness:
• Philippians
2:15 “that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God
without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom
you shine as lights in the world,”
The
Necessity of Holiness:
• Necessity of a Holy Heart
• Matthew 5:17–30 ““Do not think that I have come
to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to
fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an
iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore
whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do
the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them
and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you,
unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will
never enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to those of
old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to
judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and
whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are
offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has
something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be
reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms
quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your
accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put
in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the
last penny. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has
already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you
to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of
your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right
hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you
lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.”
• Necessary to fit us for heaven
• Revelation 7:14 “I said to him, “Sir, you know.”
And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.
They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
