Let's Get Back to the Basics (Bible Study)

Passages: 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:105; Joshua 1:8; Colossians 3:16

Over the past few weeks, we have talked about the following as pertaining to Getting Back to the Basics, I urge you to go back and re-watch the services as well:

•     Prayer - Part One and Part Two

•     Giving

•     Fasting

•     Church Growth

Probably one of the most famous verses in the Bible on studying the Bible is 2 Timothy 2:15, which says ...

KJV - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

ESV - Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

AMP - Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

Upon looking at this verse, let’s go deeper into what Paul is telling us ...

Study to be a true teacher of God’s Word. By study is meant to set your heart upon - be diligent, hurry, rush, and seek the approval of God. Note that it is the approval of God that is to be the believer’s concern. A believer is a fool if he does not seek the approval of God. To be disapproved is to be displeasing and unacceptable to God. How then can we secure the approval of God?

•     By being a workman—the idea is a diligent worker who toils and labors to the point of exhaustion.

But note: our work is pinpointed and identified. We are to study the Word of God and rightly divide it. The words rightly divide mean to cut straight. Believers are to cut straight to the truth; they are not to take crooked paths and sidetracks to the truth. We are to study the truth and rightly divide it. Once we have studied and learned the Word of God, we are to accurately teach the Word of God. We are not to teach …

•     our own ideas

•     the theories of other people

•     what we think

•     what other men think

We are not to mishandle the Word of God: twist it to fit what we think or want it to say; over-emphasize or underemphasize its teachings; add to or take away from it. Any person who mishandles God’s Word is not approved of God. This is the point of this verse: if we want God’s approval - if we want to be acceptable to God - we must study, rush and seek to be a true teacher of God’s Word. We must be workmen who study God’s Word, workmen who study diligently: who correctly analyze and accurately divide - rightly handle and skillfully teach - the Word of Truth. This is the believer who will not be ashamed when he faces the Lord Jesus Christ in the great day of judgment.

But as we study God’s Word, we should also allow His Word to be ...

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Upon having studied God’s Word and having it be a lamp and a light in our life, we need to understand that with daily meditation and obedience comes spiritual success.

Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

After studying God’s Word, allowing His Word to be a lamp and a light in our own lives, and getting the habit of daily meditation and obedience of God’s Word in our lives, so that spiritual success comes into our lives, we need to take His Word into our community.

Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

Let’s not forget that the main purpose in our lives is to tell someone about Jesus. We need to study so that we can take what we have learned into the highways and byways and bid people to come WITH us to the House of the Lord!
